Help me to understand how "Keywords" work

Hello friends

Can You help me to understand how Keywords work in the right way, not how to find them...!?
I can create websites that's not a problem but all that SEO things are not so clear for me. However, i usually use Yoast for basics but that's all. There was one time when someone gave me 5 keywords and later one big list with keywords and i didn't know how to use them....
Tell me, should i use those 5 main keywords in articles, blog, or should i use all the keywords from the list, how many keywords i should use, what to do with them, where to implement them...?!
I hope You understand my problem/question... What's the essence

Let's clear that.
Search engine motors indexing website page by page. What's that mean?
It means your contact page different from your homepage and so blog page different from an article's page. You should think and reorganize keywords page by page and independently
Above information is basic of SEO.

If you have dynamic website do not worry about homepage. Focus on articles or products(services) and create original contents about "subject" of articles(or products).

If you have static website (eg: corporate, business's websites) think corporate's primary objective. When you focused primary objective you will find correct keywords or keyword tails.
By the way i dont support one word keywords, i supports keyword tails (contains 2 or 3 words).
